A delicious wrap that holds together: filling, sauce and folding

A wrap can bring softness, crunch and a flavourful sauce into one bite. Too much filling can tear the tortilla, while excess liquid makes it difficult to hold. Assembly choices matter as much as ingredients.

Start with a flexible tortilla

Choose a tortilla suited to your intended size and follow its preparation instructions. If warming is needed to soften it, do so before filling. Place it flat on a clean surface and leave room around the filling for folding. Do not force a large wrap’s filling into a small tortilla.

Choose a main filling and two contrasts

Start with a ready-to-eat main element, then add something crunchy and something soft. Mashed cooked chickpeas could pair with grated carrots and herb sauce. Cooked vegetables, salad leaves and a familiar sauce offer another direction. These are ideas, not a complete recipe or nutrition plan. Cut large pieces down so the filling distributes more evenly.

Control moisture before rolling

Drain juicy vegetables and dry washed leaves well. Avoid pouring all the cooking liquid into the tortilla. Keep components separate until assembly. For a first try, spread a thin layer of sauce over the filled area and offer the rest separately. Adding more while eating is easier than fixing a soggy wrap.

Arrange instead of piling

Make a compact band of filling near the centre, leaving the sides and some of the lower edge clear. Check that the tortilla folds easily before adding more. If overfilled, remove some and serve it alongside. This protects the fold without prescribing how much to eat; wrap size and the complete meal are different things.

Fold gently

Fold the sides inward, then bring the bottom edge over the filling. Hold gently and roll towards the opposite edge, keeping the sides tucked in. Rest seam-side down. If cutting, use a suitable knife and hold without crushing. If it splits, reconsider flexibility or filling quantity rather than squeezing harder.

Serve and remember your favourite version

Assemble close to mealtime to enjoy contrasting textures. Note any adjustment: less sauce, better-drained vegetables or smaller pieces.
