No avocado? Keep your toast and wraps delicious

An avocado that is still hard or costs more than you want to spend need not change your whole meal. First identify its role: a spread, slices or a creamy finishing touch. Then look at the ingredients available in your kitchen.

Replace the role, not the food itself

On toast, avocado can provide a soft layer for other ingredients. In a wrap, it contrasts with crisp vegetables. An alternative need not taste identical to work, but a thin sauce will not behave like slices in a sandwich. Decide which texture you want first.

For a spread, consider chickpeas

Already cooked, drained chickpeas can be mashed or blended into a base for seasoning. Try a small amount and adjust the consistency gradually so it spreads without running. Taste it with your chosen bread or filling before adding herbs or spices. This approach does not require buying tahini or another extra ingredient; it gives the dish a different character.

For a green filling, try peas

Cook peas according to their package instructions, drain them and mash or blend them into a spread. Leave texture or blend more finely to suit your taste. Try a small portion first because the flavour differs from avocado. If too wet for a wrap, adjust the consistency before filling and avoid adding plenty of sauce straight away.

For creaminess, use something you enjoy

Thick fromage blanc or plain soft cheese can make a creamy base. Season it separately and add gradually to keep the filling manageable. Spread the base before adding other ingredients rather than treating it as a replacement for slices. Check suitability for everyone eating, particularly when allergies or dietary exclusions apply.

Compare actual costs and update estimates

Compare the cost of the amount used rather than just the price of a package. An ingredient already planned for another meal can be convenient, but is not automatically cheaper everywhere. These are culinary swaps, not guarantees of identical calories or macros. If tracking them, recalculate using actual products and quantities; values remain estimates.
