Swap costly ingredients without losing the pleasure of cooking
Before buying a costly ingredient for one dish, identify its role. You may already have a useful alternative. Try a small amount first.

Replace a role
Is the ingredient there for creaminess, crunch, acidity or as a base? A swap can serve that purpose without being identical. A substitution for a cold sauce may not work in a baked cake, where moisture affects the result.
Instead of skyr
For a cold herb sauce or layered dessert, try thick plain fromage blanc or unsweetened plain yogurt. Add liquids gradually. A thinner yogurt may suit a pourable sauce. These are culinary suggestions, not protein equivalents; check the specific label.
Instead of pine nuts
Unsalted sunflower seeds may suit a topping or pesto-inspired sauce if cheaper locally. Chop or blend gradually and expect a different flavour. Nuts already in your cupboard are another option. Check everyone’s allergies; changing seeds or nuts does not guarantee suitability.
Instead of quinoa
Rice, couscous or pasta can form a different bowl base. Follow their own cooking instructions. This replaces a use, not a nutritional composition. Equal dry or cooked weights do not guarantee equal volume or macros.
Instead of a specific herb
Try an herb you enjoy and already have. Parsley will not taste like basil, but can take a sauce in another direction. Add a little and taste. Dried herbs are not a volume-for-volume replacement for fresh ones.
Check the actual saving
Compare unit prices, the amount needed and how you will use leftovers. For estimated macros, use the label of your actual replacement. DGCCRF explains that European labels express nutrition per 100 g or 100 ml. See our related label-to-serving article below.
Keep notes
Record amounts and the resulting texture or flavour. Yumlean’s recipe cards provide a starting point with servings and estimated macros; swaps require a fresh estimate. Label source: DGCCRF, “Déclaration nutritionnelle sur les denrées alimentaires”, accessed 29 September 2026.
